Returning for its fourth year, Tapuwae Roa is proud to continue empowering rangatahi Māori leadership and excellence across the oceans sector through our annual Tukuoha funding round.

This year’s Tukuoha funding round saw the return of the Tonganui Scholarship, designed to support Māori advancing tikanga and mātauranga tuku iho in the oceans sector, and the Pou Herenga Tangata Award, dedicated to supporting rangatahi aspiring to community leadership and service.

Our panel were thoroughly impressed and touched by the high calibre of applications received from around the motu and we mihi to those who took the time to share their kaupapa with us – poho kererū ana!

After careful consideration and much deliberation, we are excited to present our 12 Tukuoha funding recipients for 2024!

Tonganui Scholars 2024

The Tonganui scholarship consists of a $10,000 grant designed to accelerate talented, Māori professionals in pursuit of education or research that advances tikanga Māori, mātauranga tuku iho and Te Ao Māori within the oceans sector.

Pou Herenga Tangata Awardees 2024

The Pou Herenga Tangata Award consists of a $5,000 grant that aims to support rangatahi Māori to become our next generation of leaders. Recipients can either be rangatahi Māori (aged 16-24) who aspire to serve their community, or organisations that support rangatahi Māori to become leaders in their community.

Successful awardees and scholarship recipients of Tapuwae Roa funding become part of Ngā Auahitūroa – Tapuwae Roa’s Alumni network of over 300 diverse, passionate, and highly talented Māori throughout Aotearoa. Recipients have included academic scholars, community organisations, scientists, and community leaders.
